Hemingway's series titled 'The Genies' is ongoing and seems to be even more relevant in this unusual time of lock-down, the idea of someone trapped inside, perhaps hoping to break free. In these paintings we never see anyone outside the salt seller. We never see the real person outside of his or her cell. We merely glance a portion, a small part of the model. Even then there is a distortion. This creates what we probably all know, that we only ever see each other in part. We never see the whole and even then there is a distortion. In truth, everyone, one way or another, is trying to break free.
